Sedation Dentistry

For some people, the thought of a dental appointment can be anxiety-inducing. If this is the case with you, Dental Health Centre provides sedation dentistry to create a safe, comfortable, anxiety-free experience.

There are different levels of sedation ranging from mild (where you are still awake) to deep (where you are asleep). These are used according to your needs and preferences. Before administering any sedation, your dentist will analyze your medical history and note any medications you’re currently taking.

At Dental Health Centre, we use laughing gas and general anesthesia.

  • Laughing gas – This gaseous sedation is a combination of nitrous and oxygen which the patient inhales through a mask. The amount of sedation received is controlled by the dentist. This is a low level of sedation, where you are still awake, but anxiety is relieved, and pain is reduced. The effects of nitrous wear off quickly, meaning that you can recover and may even be able to drive yourself home at the end of your appointment.
  • General anesthesia – This is a deep level of sedation where you are rendered either nearly or completely unconscious. It is administered by an anesthesiologist who continuously monitors your vital signs, airway patency, cardiovascular status, neurological status, and ventilation throughout the dental procedure. General anesthesia is usually used for extensive dental treatments, or for patients who are highly anxious. When undergoing general anesthesia, patients are completely unaware of the procedure taking place and are not easily awakened. In fact, they do not wake from deep sedation until the anesthesia wears off or until the effects are reversed with medication.
