Teeth can appear yellow in color due to a number of reasons. Food and drink have a large effect on the appearance of the teeth, especially coffee, tea, and wine. Tobacco usage can also heavily stain teeth. Besides these external factors, teeth can change color or darken over time simply as a natural result of aging: as the outer layer of the teeth (the enamel) erodes, the layer underneath (the dentin), which is more yellow in color, becomes more visible.
There are many options available to brighten your smile again. These include over-the-counter methods such as strips, toothpaste, and gels. While these may have some results, a more effective option is a teeth whitening procedure at your dentist office.
Also called chairside bleaching, this process is fast and effective for whitening teeth. It usually takes just one hour and consists of applying a hydrogen peroxide gel to the teeth, then giving the teeth a light treatment.
For possibly a more comfortable procedure, or if it’s difficult for you to make the time to go to the dentist’s office, take-home teeth whitening is available. The process takes a little longer, as it consists of several applications over the course of several days, but it can be just as effective. Like with the in-office treatment, the take-home method uses a hydrogen peroxide gel, which is applied to the teeth via a mouth guard and worn for a specific amount of time.
To decide on the right whitening treatment for you, book a consultation with your dentist.
